About the MAP

In the Netherlands, Wageningen University & Research coordinates the Multi-Actor Platform Greenport Gelderland. This regional MAP aims at addressing climate change effects on competitive fruit cultivation.

In 2020, this MAP worked on the “Orchard of the future” to form an idea of the future outlook of fruit farms in the region as a result of many developments. In 2021, the focus of the MAP changed to the effects of climate change, especially on water availability and management. Due to the dry periods, high temperatures, and extreme rainfall caused by climate change, water can sometimes be a scarce resource, but it is essential for fruit cultivation. To secure the availability of sufficient water of good quality in the future, the MAP will gather fruit growers and stakeholders to help position action plans.

Objectives

The activities of this MAP are designed to achieve the following specific objectives:

  • MAP objective 1: The “Action plan” of 2021 to create and strengthen opportunities/possibilities to handle the effects of climate change on water for the fruit sector will be elaborated in 2022.
  • Map objective 2: Develop own MAP vision of the water issue, as it became clear in 2021 that the MAP is a better stakeholder in this local, regional, national and political discussion with an own vision.
  • MAP objective 3: Enhance connectedness of MAP to, and its anticipation of, ongoing and upcoming policy development processes.
