On 26 March 2021, the Portuguese presidency of the Council of the EU, chaired the super trilogue together with the European Parliament and the European Commission to discuss the future Common Agricultural Policy (CAP).
Following the CAP reform trilogue, Maria do Céu Antunes, Minister of Agriculture of Portugal, gave a press conference and presented the preliminary remarks and expressed that the mandates given by the Council have been achieved on the following point:
- New delivering model, and specifically regarding direct payments, conditionality control and transparency when it comes to implementation of funds. In addition, an agreement has been reached regarding the indicators measuring performance.
- Wine sector: extending the planting authority scheme until 2025.
- Strengthening the position of farmers in the value chain with an agreement to extend the regulation of supply to all agricultural products with quality schemes PDO and PGI.
The Minister of Agriculture of Portugal noted the progress achieved so far and looks ahead to concluding the reform by the end of this semester. A new meeting will be organised with the Member States at a technical level to continue the progress of the new CAP.
