The first meeting of the Galician Multi-Actor Platform (MAP) in this new second cycle of SHERPA took place on 22 June 2021. Starting from the work carried out in 2020, the main objective of this meeting was to delve into the vision on the future of rural Galicia in 2040, having as a frame of reference four specific scenarios developed by the Joint Research Center (JRC).
As main results, it was underlined the consensus reached among MAP members on the heterogeneity of rural Galicia. Hence, it was considered necessary to use a classification that takes into account aspects such as trends in land use, the urban-rural gradient, agro-livestock activity and the economic and business dynamism. This in turn divides the territory into three clearly differentiated areas: abandoned rural, active rural and urban-forest rural.
Most MAP members placed the desirable future of rural Galicia in the scenario ‘rural renewal’, in which governance has a more comprehensive, coordinated and participatory character and in which demographic dynamics are positive. When deciding about the trends to act upon to achieve that desirable future, differences were established for each of the three defined rural areas.
Thus, for the abandoned rural, more emphasis was placed on environmental issues and the provision of services to the population; for the active rural, greater significance was given to the assessment of primary production; and for the urban-forest rural, the need to advance in digitalisation or overcoming traditional gender roles were highlighted as key.
During the first cycle of SHERPA MAPs, the Galician MAP focused on the topic ‘Long-Term Vision for Rural Areas’ bringing forward the opportunities and enablers for the future of rural Galicia.
