Rural youth leading the change

Stakeholders
05/07/2022

Europe needs the vision, engagement and participation of all young people to build a better future that is greener, more inclusive and digital. And so do rural areas!

In the recently published brochure, the European Network for Rural Development (ENRD), highlights 12 examples of projects led or implemented by young people in rural areas. These projects, realised with the support of EAFRD[1], range from new business ideas, to addressing environmental sustainability and setting up farm incubators.

Overall, these examples highlight the role of rural youth in providing ideas, inspiration and energy to imagine, create and grasp opportunities for stronger, more connected, resilient and prosperous rural areas.

The EU is striving to give young people more and better opportunities to shape Europe’s future and naming 2022 as the European Year of Youth is more than a symbolic step. In fact, within the EU Youth Strategy for 2019-2027, one of the goals refers to rural youth, aiming to create the conditions that enable young people to fulfil their potential in rural areas and ensuring equality for young people in urban and rural settings.
