The last SHERPA Position Paper on Empowering Rural Areas In Multi-level Governance Processes has just been published! This Position Paper summarises the inputs of the 41 SHERPA MAPs’ discussion on governance in 2023 and their recommendations to improve multi-level governance processes in rural areas for both policymakers and research institutions.
Multi-level governance in rural areas
Well-coordinated multi-level governance systems have the capacity to unleash the potential of rural networks and communities, capitalise on their strengths and enhance citizen engagement in rural areas. Yet, limited participation, inclusion of marginalised groups, bureaucratic hurdles, low representation of rural interests and regional disparities are some of the most common challenges in rural governance that emerged from the discussion of the SHERPA MAPs.
The SHERPA Position Paper on Empowering Rural Areas In Multi-level Governance Processes provides an overview of the state-of-the-art of rural governance across its 41 MAPs at local, regional, national and EU levels. It also provides a list of inspiring initiatives and recommendations to improve multi-level governance in rural areas.
