In July 2020, the European Commission launched the public consultation on the roadmap for the adoption of a ‘Communication on the Long-term vision for rural areas’, foreseen for 2021. The consultation is open for feedback until 9 September 2020.
This initiative aims to set out a vision for the future of rural areas by 2040 and the role they play in society covering challenges such as demographic change, connectivity, low income levels and limited access to services. It will also explore innovative, inclusive and sustainable solutions in the light of climate and digital transformation and the COVID-19 crisis.
At a recent high-level webinar on A vision for rural Europe, the European Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen, highlighted the importance of rural areas for the future of the European project. The Commission has proposed to strengthen the role of rural areas with a common vision, establishing a joint direction and making more financial resources available for it, and ultimately seeking to take decisive steps to develop its strategy.
