MAPs Cluster on ‘Climate Change and Environmental Services’

SHERPA MAPs
14/06/2021

At the beginning of June 2021, Facilitators and Monitors of the SHERPA Multi-Actor Platforms (MAPs) met online to share updates on the work carried out on ‘Climate change and environmental services’ for MAP’s second cycle.

During the meeting, Jorieke Potters, of Wageningen University, facilitated the exchange of experiences among the SHERPA MAPs that are part of this thematic cluster.

Seven of the eight MAPs of the cluster explained: (i) how the work is going, (ii) which are the changes in composition and strategy of running the MAP, (iii) how planned meetings feed into the engagement process, and (iv) how the MAP plans to establish linkages to local, regional or national policy processes.

All MAPs are preparing the multi-actor dialogue. They plan to organise two workshops in 2021 (one in July and one in September). For the first event, MAPs will reflect on the SHERPA Discussion Paper on Climate Change and Environmental Sustainability. For that, MAPs are translating it into the national language and adjusting it to the specificities of the local context.

Some MAPs have looked for the missing voices through a stakeholder mapping. In this second cycle, MAPs have targeted the inclusion of specific actors, for example:

  • scientific experts, in particular on climate change and ecosystem services;
  • sociology experts for the application of qualitative methods;
  • members of government bodies, for instance a policy officer from the regional administration, or a member of the national parliament;
  • a family business working with migrant minority groups.

In terms of linking with different levels of policy-making, some MAPs are following the design of the national Strategic Plans of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP).

MAPs are maintaining long-standing relationships with the administration and are looking to create new links with administration and policy beyond agriculture. For example in the case of the Czech MAP, the focus will be on landscape sustainability.

In addition, some MAPs are exploring new relationships with the National Rural Network (NRN).

Furthermore, MAPs commented the update status of their Dynamic Action Plans (DAP), which guide their activities. Some of them will present it to a wider audience and will conduct some interviews with mayors, Local Action Group managers, natural resources experts, etc.
